Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer

Ahhh, Summer! Sunny skies, Swimmihng pools, moist air and…damaged hair! Here are a few things that can cause hair damage and how you can prevent it.

Swimming Pools

Blonde hair turning green after swimming is often attributed to the interaction between the hair and chemicals in the pool water, particularly chlorine. Chlorine, commonly used to sanitize swimming pools, can react with certain minerals, such as copper, that may be present in your tap water or in hair products.

When chlorine combines with copper, it forms copper chloride, which has a greenish color. This compound can then bind to the protein in the hair, especially if the hair has been damaged or has open cuticles from bleach or exposure to the pool water, leading to a greenish tint. This effect is more noticeable on blonde hair because it lacks the darker pigments that might mask the greenish hue.

To prevent this, it’s helpful to rinse your hair with clean water before swimming to reduce the absorption of pool water, and to use hair products designed to protect against chlorine damage.

Additionally, wearing a swimming cap can provide a physical barrier to reduce exposure to pool water.

Sun Exposure

Just like your skin, your hair can be damaged by exposure to UV rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to dryness, brittleness, and fading of hair color.

To prevent this, protect your hair from UV rays by wearing hats or using hair products with UV protection.

Heat Styling

Hot temperatures during the summer might tempt you to use heat styling tools more frequently, such as hair dryers, straighteners, or curling irons. Excessive heat can weaken the hair shaft and cause breakage.

To prevent this, limit heat styling and use heat protectant products when neccessary. Consider protective hairstyles like braids or buns to minimize exposure to environmental factors. Keep hair hyrated by using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners and consider using deep conditioning treatment s regularly.

Don’t forget to get a healthy trim at the beginnikng and end of Summer!
